On Wednesday, India reported a massive increase in coronavirus cases, with 9,195 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. According to data shared by the Union health ministry, the national tally of Covid-19 infection has risen to 34,808,886, with 77,002 active cases.

According to the data, the number of cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus in the country has risen to 781, with Delhi accounting for the most with 238 cases. With 167 Omicron cases, Maharashtra came in second, followed by Gujarat (73), Kerala (65), Telangana (62), and Rajasthan (46).

The total number of people who have passed away due to the Covid-19 infection has risen to 4,80,592, with 302 more deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours, 7,347 people have recovered from the viral disease, bringing the total recoveries to 3,42,51,292.

Active cases account for less than 1% (0.22) of all cases in the country, which is the lowest level since March 2020.

As per the Ministry of Health data, the recovery rate has risen to 98.40 percent, the highest since March 2020.

The weekly positivity rate has been less than 1% (0.68) for the last 45 days, while the daily positivity rate has remained less than 2% (0.79) for the previous 86 days.

So far, 143.15 crore vaccine doses have been administered in the country as part of the ongoing Covid-19 nationwide vaccination campaign.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with the Council of Ministers on Wednesday to discuss the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in the country. 

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., according to Hindustan Times’ sister publication Livehindustan. The Omicron variant and the upcoming polls next year are likely to dominate the conversation.
