The actress Deepika Padukone will serve on the competition jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, according to the festival’s organisers.

The 75th edition of the prestigious festival, which will take place from May 17-28, will be presided over by French actor Vincent Lindon, according to an announcement made late Tuesday evening on the festival’s official Twitter account.

Padukone is a member of the eight-person jury that will award the Palme d’Or to one of the 21 films in competition on Saturday, May 28 during the closing ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival.

Other members of the jury include actress-turned-director Rebecca Hall, Swedish actor Noomi Rapace, Italian actor-turned-director Jasmine Trinca, acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, French filmmaker-turned-actor Ladj Ly, filmmaker Jeff Nichols, and Norwegian director-screenwriter Joachim Trier, among others.

Lindon stated in a statement issued on the festival’s official website that the jury “will make every effort to ensure that the films of the future are cared for in the best possible way.”

‘It is a real honour and a source of pleasure for me to have been entrusted with the splendid and significant duty of chairing the Jury for the 75th International Cannes Film Festival, especially given all that is going on in the world at this time.’

As a group, my jury and I will work hard to ensure that films of the future are treated as carefully as possible, as they all carry the same secret hope of courage and loyalty as well as freedom, with a mission to move the greatest number of women and men by speaking to them about their common wounds and joys. Kulture, according to Lindon, “helps the human soul rise and have hope for the future.”

Padukone, 36, served as chairperson of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival for two years prior to that position.

She first gained public attention with her 2007 film “Om Shanti Om,” in which she co-starred with Shah Rukh Khan, and went on to appear in several other blockbuster and critically acclaimed films, including “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” “Chennai Express,” “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela,” “Bajirao Mastani,” “Padmaavat,” and “Piku.”

The performer, who was most recently seen in Shakun Batra’s “Gehraiyaan,” made her feature film debut in the 2017 action film “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage,” which was directed by Vin Diesel and starred Vin Diesel and Jessica Chastain.

Padukone is currently working on a number of projects, including the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Pathan,” the Hrithik Roshan-starrer “Fighter,” an untitled film with Prabhas, and the Hindi remake of the Hollywood film “The Intern.”
