Rohit Sharma, the skipper of the Mumbai Indians, is on thin ice and might face a one-match ban in the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) if his team fails to maintain the required over rate in the upcoming matches. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a cricket tournament held in India.
As a result of MI’s failure to complete the required 20 overs within the time restriction on Wednesday, Rohit was fined Rs 24 lakh, while the rest of the playing eleven were each fined Rs 6 lakhs or 25 percent of their match money, whichever is lesser, during the IPL match against Punjab Kings (April 13). Previously, the ‘Hitman’ had been fined Rs 12 lakh for the same infraction following a match against the Delhi Capitals in April.
If Mumbai commits the same infraction for the third time, Rohit would be fined Rs 30 lakh and will also be suspended for one match, according to the IPL’s official rules.
According to the official rules on minimum over rate criterion, “the third and each subsequent offence as Captain of the bowling Team in a Season would result in a fine of Rs. 30 lakh and a ban from participation in the Team’s next League Match.”
Meanwhile, Punjab Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 12 runs in an IPL 2022 encounter on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.
Loss number five in a row for the five-time champion Mumbai Indians, who remain the only unbeaten club in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2022 season and are currently ranked last in the points standings.
