Lionel Messi has won a World Cup, a full complement of other soccer (also known as football) honours, and now the title of Instagram user with the most liked post. His photos from the moment the Argentine team won the 2022 World Cup have received nearly 64 million likes. That is sufficient to surpass the previous record-holder, an egg stock shot on a white backdrop with the caption, “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram.”
The egg’s record has been in place since the beginning of 2019 after it outperformed a post by Kylie Jenner by garnering 19 million likes. It has approximately 57 million likes as of this writing.

The list of the top 20 Instagram photos with the most likes has been dominated by Messi and other footballers, so despite the egg’s long-standing record, its days were plainly numbered. Seven of Messi’s eight positions on the list were posted before, during, or after this year’s World Cup. (Personal favourites of mine include the pictures of him with the trophy on a plane, which received 37 million likes, and the pictures of him with the trophy in bed, which received 37.5 million likes.) Two further posts on the list also came from the game.
Messi’s position will probably be eliminated at some point in the future. However, it appears that a huge number of Instagram users have joined the throngs of people who are currently celebrating the triumph he assisted in achieving.
