During the inauguration event of the Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, made a special appearance.

“It is an honour for me to be here in the land of Mahatma Gandhi,” Ghebreyesus remarked in Gujarati as he addressed the audience during the ceremony.

Additionally, in his talk, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that long-term strategic investments, in conjunction with government assistance, are essential for supporting innovation in the field of traditional medicine.

DG Tedros Ghebreyesus of the World Health Organization stated that “long-term strategic investments with government commitment are required to support the innovation ecosystem for medicine in general and traditional medicine in particular.”

“Innovators, industry, and government must work together to improve traditional medicine in a way that is sustainable, environmentally sensitive, and egalitarian,” the WHO’s director general continued.

As the WHO Director-General noted, “when introducing traditional medicines into the market, we must ensure that communities that fostered and passed on this knowledge also benefit from their growth.”

The event was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Union Minister for AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal.
